In today’s society there are many extracurricular activities available to young children. Many youth sports provide many positive effects that can last a lifetime.

Some of those extra curricular activities include playing soccer, football, cheerleading, wrestling, karate, basketball, golf, hockey and the list goes on.  If approached correctly youth activities can bring wonderful feelings of self-worth. Playing youth sports can help with living a healthy lifestyle, maintaining a healthy weight, creating positive self-esteem, and avoiding harmful demises.

But unfortunately some children are never given the opportunity to participate in youth sports because of economic factors beyond their control.

The Carousel Center for Abused Children -

Wilmington, NC

The Carousel Center is a non-profit organization committed to assisting victims of child abuse, providing critical care services to children from 15 counties throughout southeastern North Carolina. Referrals are made through law enforcement, social services and physicians. Eighty percent of the children we see were 11 years old or younger, with the most common age in 2010 being only four years old. Of those children whom we see, approximately 80 percent have allegations of suffering from sexual abuse.

Carousel Center Executive Director April Pickett recently appeared on WECT’s My Turn, Your Turn to comment on the movie “Precious.” To view the video, please click here.
